SEATTLE -- The Seattle City Council Tuesday focused on the city's music scene.

Council members got their first look at a report that evaluates the economic impact of the Seattle music industry and the working conditions of musicians. The Musicians' Association of Seattle put together the report.

There are about 16,000 musicians in the Seattle area, but life can be tough.

Nate Omdal is a bassist and has been booking gigs around Western Washington since high school. He has loved being a part of the Seattle music scene, but he says it's not an easy way to make a living.

Many musicians report unfair compensation, being mistreated or uncertainty when being hired at a club.

"I myself, have experienced some pretty unfair last minute business agreement changes...Some guy comes out in the backroom and says, oh the deal is going to be this tonight," said Omdal.

Despite the fact that the musicians contribute $4.3 billion a year in direct and indirect impact to the local economy, a typical musician earns about $15,000 a year.
