Police looking for suspect in drive-by shooting near Alki Beach

Police said someone drove by and shot a person in a car parked along condominiums on Harbor Avenue not far from Alki Beach.

SEATTLE — Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in West Seattle that injured a man early Wednesday morning.

The Seattle Police Department said the shooting happened on Harbor Avenue. Officers responded to the shooting at 12:45 a.m. Police said someone drove by and shot a person in a car parked along condominiums on Harbor Avenue not far from Alki Beach.

KING 5 spoke to a witness, who did not want to be identified but heard the gunfire outside her door.

"I was watching TV and I heard several shots rang out and I thought that's gunfire so I hit the floor and I crawled to the back of the apartment," the woman said.

The witness said she heard the victim yell for help and she dialed 911.

"When I called they said where are you because we've had two shootings in West Seattle and I want to know which incident you're calling about," the witness said.

According to Seattle police data, officers responded to two other shootings in West Seattle - one on Avalon and another on Beach Drive just minutes before the man was shot.

KING 5 is working to learn if the shootings are connected.

The Harbor Ave shooting victim was treated on scene by medics with the Seattle Fire Department and decided to take himself to the hospital.

"He was a 20-year veteran he said and he was upset this is something that happened to him because he had given so much of his life to the United States," the woman said. "I was sad for him about that too."

This time last year, a man was shot and killed less than two miles away near Alki Beach. The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department issued a curfew for Alki Beach and Golden Gardens because of dangerous and illegal activity during the summer months of 2022 and 2023.

The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department said its board will meet Thursday to hear a proposal about reinstating early closures for Alki Beach and Golden Gardens for this summer.

Meanwhile, the woman who witnessed the latest shooting hopes this violence does not continue.

"I hope this doesn't become a regular thing though," the woman said. "West Seattle is a really nice place to live I'm worried crime is getting a little worse."

It is unclear what led up to the shooting on Harbor Avenue and the suspect was gone when police arrived. Seattle Police have not released a suspect description at this time.
