SEATTLE — A 47-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center after a shooting occurred near A4 Apple Learning Center in Seattle's Central District on Monday.
The shooting happened in the afternoon near 23rd Avenue South and South Jackson Street.
The man is now in satisfactory condition, according to the hospital.
Children inside the Seattle daycare heard shots firing outside the building on Monday. The bullets shattered the windows. Plywood was used to cover the broken window.
Appollonia Washington, co-owner of A4 Apple Learning Center, said children were in circle time and transitioning to afternoon snack time when they heard the shots.
"My immediate reaction was to tell the children to army crawl," Washington said. "And I’m glad I told them to army crawl, because I saw glass shatter. I had 24 children sitting in front of me. And this is something they knew to do because this is something that we practice because of the area we are in.”
Washington also pushed for additional police patrols to increase security in the area.
"I don't want to experience this again," Washington said. "Can we get patrol? Can we get officers walking by, you know? This freaks me out."
A4 Apple Learning Center released a statement about the incident. It read, in part:
"The shooting left windows broken and glass shattered where the children were sitting. Our hearts are broken by this occurrence as it is our life's mission to educate and nourish our children, parents trust their children to come each day to school with the expectation they will be safe and educated."
Police are asking the public to avoid the area.
