MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — A group of paddleboarding Santas hit Lake Washington early Friday morning for a good cause.
The Northwest Paddle Community organized Santa Paddle Week. This morning, they launched from the shores of Mercer Island near Interstate 90 and headed west.
Organizers said the paddle is a way to spread holiday cheer, and also raise money for those battling cancer.
"It's so fun to be out here and just bring joy to people by all dressing up and paddling," said one participant, Alison Cardinal.
The group says this has been a holiday tradition for ten years now, even sparking similar events elsewhere.
"Every bit matters across the globe, that's what this is about," said Scott Harrington. "And this has inspired other things in other states, cities."
The paddling Santas, one Buddy the Elf and the Grinch were spotted on the Washington State Department of Transportation's camera showing I-90 over Lake Washington.
"It's a great opportunity to be with friends, bring a little bit of Christmas joy to people on the freeway above us but importantly also contribute to the families who are having to struggle this time of year with cancer and other problems," said Ian McKerlich, who donned the elf costume.
All the money raised by the event is distributed to families or individuals to assist in their fight against cancer during the holiday season.
By Friday afternoon, they had raised nearly $4,500, nearly halfway to their goal of $10,000.
