SEATTLE, Wash. -- Playground equipment can be dangerous during hot weather, since surfaces can heat to 130 degrees and higher on sunny days.

A thermal imaging camera that measures temperature, came back with hot readings for slides, swings and other surfaces at Carkeek Park in Seattle on Thursday.

A seesaw was 100 degrees. A park bench was more than 130 degrees. The top of a trash can topped 150 degrees.

The sand and rocks at the beach were also scorching -- close to 130 degrees.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns parents about the risks of serious burns from hot playground equipment, even when the outside temperature is only in the 70s.

Seattle Parks and Recreation says it intentionally places metal or stainless steel slides in the shade or facing away from the late afternoon sun to help cool off those surfaces.

The city has 150 play areas.
