Seattle-area group aiming to continue sock drive to gather 10,000 for unhoused community members

Dignity for Divas is leading its eighth campaign to donate one thousand pairs of new socks to 10 western Washington shelters.

SEATTLE — Dignity for Divas, a Seattle nonprofit that helps women experiencing homelessness to transition to housing, is calling on the community to support its 8th annual “10 for 10” Sock Drive.

The goal is to donate one thousand pairs of new socks to 10 western Washington shelters.

The nonprofit's founder and executive director Nikki Gane-Butler said the annual effort has allowed the group to donate more than 100,000 pairs of new socks.

Gane-Butler said one of the most sought-after items at local shelters is unused socks. She suggested people imagine what it would be like to spend a day or night in wet cold socks to realize the need.

"Moisture-wicking socks are especially important for those facing humid conditions," Gane-Butler said. "By pulling moisture away from the skin, conditions such as infections and blisters can be prevented."

Working with local shelters - Gane-Butler said proper socks can provide a simple, but important layer of protection between feet and limb-threatening conditions.

Dignity for Divas recommends people organize their own sock drive in-house. The nonprofit will provide the signage and supporting materials to help inspire your employees to rally behind the cause.

During the week of November 13, one of our volunteers will swing by your office to gather your sock collection, which will then be donated in your company’s name during the 10 for 10 Sock Drive on Nov. 18 & 19 at the Diva Dream Academy at 306 Dexter Ave.

People are also welcome to donate a collection directly during the drive any time from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days.

Other ways to help:

If you're unable to stop by the in-person drive or host a sock drive - you can buy socks on the nonprofit's Amazon Wish List and the socks will go directly to the effort. For the Wish List link, click here.
