Seattle police chief releases department social media policy

SEATTLE -- Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole released an updated social media policy for the department on Friday.

The policy was sparked by backlash after a cop allegedly made racially charged comments on her personal Facebook profile.

"It's unfortunate that behavior on social media by a few has contributed to the erosion of our collective efforts," Chief O'Toole said in her post of the new policy.

The social media policy, which goes into effect March 1st, laid out expectations for department accounts and the personal accounts of employees.

Section 1 under "Employees Personal Use of Social Media," specifies that employees should not "make, share or comment" in a way that expresses bias against any "protected class of individuals."

Officer Cynthia Whitlatch is under review by the department and Office of Professional Accountability following criticism after the dash cam video of an arrest of a man carrying a golf club was released.

In July 2014, 69-year-old William Wingate was booked into jail for obstruction and harassment. He claims he was singled out because of his race.
