SEATTLE -- For four decades "Mama's Mexican Kitchen" has been a beloved Seattle institution with divey, over-the-top interior and cheesey combo plates.

But owner Mike McAlpin has sold the property to a Chinese development firm firm for $4.5 million, according to the Seattle Times.

The restaurant on Second Avenue and Bell Street will be torn down and replaced with an eight-story, 60-unit mixed-use development.

Mama's has always attracted crowds. According to McAlpin, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were regulars at Mama's.

The restaurant has attracted other rockers and stars, from Ann and Nancy Wilson, Eddie Vedder, and Marilyn Manson to Drew Barrymore and Tom Robbins.

McAlpin holds a six-month lease on the building and he plans to keep Mama's open until at least September.

The restaurant will mark it's 41st birthday in June.
