25 tiny homes at Seattle shelter damaged in fire, suspect held on $20,000 bail

Twenty-eight people have been displaced. The Red Cross is helping them find shelter.

SEATTLE — Dozens of tiny homes serving as shelter in Seattle were damaged in an early morning fire on Thursday.

The Seattle Fire Department posted that the fire had been extinguished just before 3 a.m., however at least 28 people have been displaced from the Catholic Community Services Bridge. Before they lived in the tiny home village the 28 people were experiencing homelessness.

Twenty-five tiny home shelters were lost in the fire. Residents told KING 5 the flames moved quickly through the village. A larger structure that was also serving as a shelter was damaged as well, though it has been deemed safe to return to.

One person was detained for questioning related to the fire. The suspect was scheduled to appear in court Friday, July 19, but waived his right to appear. The court found probable cause for reckless burning and set bail at $20,000.

The cause is still under investigation.

The Red Cross, King County, and the catholic charity that runs the village are helping those who were displaced find shelter. Around 20 people have been connected with new shelter, and the rest are expected to be connected by the end of the day.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
