Toddler rescued from car after crash; driver suspected of DUI

A 40-year-old female driver and a 2-year-old boy were both transported to the hospital.

SEATTLE — A toddler is in the hospital after he was in a vehicle that crashed into parked vehicles, a curb, and into a building before finally coming to a stop.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) said it responded to the scene on 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 80th Street to find the vehicle along with a bystander who reportedly extricated the child from the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old woman, was extricated from the car by crews who had to remove the roof of the vehicle. SPD says the driver suffered severe injuries and the toddler suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Both the driver and the toddler were taken to Harborview Medical Center for further care, the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) confirmed.

SPD also said police obtained a blood warrant for the driver after conducting a DUI investigation. Once she is medically cleared, SPD says the driver will be arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and reckless endangerment.

"The noise was so loud. It was crazy,” said Lee Thornton, who lives steps away from where the overnight crash happened.

Neighbor Damon Dewey also woke up to the crashing sounds and saw the driver.

"She was driving on the wrong way of the street, north on 15th Avenue Northwest,” said Dewey.

Neighbors saw firefighters cut the roof off the car to get the driver and the 2-year-old out.

"It could have been a lot worse, definitely. We were lucky that the person who was following her observed her strange driving behavior, was able to take the child out and kind of reassure the child and give him some comfort,” said Dewey.

In the daylight, the damage was more visible, including a crushed brand-new car that had been parked on the street.

"Less than 100 miles on it even. We just bought it. It was my wife's car,” said Thornton. "It is just a car, but it was crazy, especially with a kid being in the car and stuff. That everybody was safe, that was the most important thing."
