Shooting of UW student near Ravenna under investigation

Seattle police believe the woman was not intentionally targeted but have yet to locate the suspect who fired the gun.

SEATTLE — A University of Washington student was shot in the leg on Thursday morning and taken to the hospital in satisfactory condition, the school confirmed in a release Friday.

The student, identified as a 20-year-old woman by the Seattle Police Department (SPD), was shot near the intersection of Northeast 52nd Street and 22nd Avenue Northeast just before 11 a.m. Thursday.

SPD believes the student was not intentionally targeted but was caught in the middle of an altercation between two non-UW people, the school said in its release.

Police said the suspect approached the student before an "unprovoked" shooting.

Gunfire struck an empty car and a building as well.

The suspect fled the scene on foot away from UW's campus, the school said. UW's release describes the suspect as having worn a black, puffy jacket with black pants who was last seen in a gold four-door vehicle.
