SEATTLE — A new grocery store could be coming to the north Seattle area, replacing the old Sam’s Club that has been vacant for several years.

Engineering firm JSA Civil filed a proposal with the city of Seattle on Sept. 9 on behalf of WinCo Foods to redevelop the building, which is located on Aurora Avenue North near North 137th Street.

As part of the building and land use pre-application, WinCo said it planned to remove and rebuild the southern and eastern walls of the building and reconfigure the parking lot.

The existing building is 144,776 square feet, and the land parcel covers 11.67 acres, according to an earlier site plan filed with the city.

The Sam’s Club on Aurora Avenue North closed in 2018 when its parent company Walmart decided to shutter 63 stores across the country. Sam’s Club locations in Auburn and Renton also closed, according to CNBC.

Costco previously filed plans with the city in 2021 to renovate the building and open a warehouse. However, those plans never came to fruition.

If WinCo were to open a Seattle location, it would be the grocery store’s first in the city. WinCo has 13 locations in the Puget Sound area. The closest ones to Seattle are in Kent and Edmonds.
