SEATTLE – Washington State Department of Transportation bridge inspectors are getting an up-close look at the Ship Canal Bridge this week.

WSDOT says while there have been three reports of debris falling from the bridge the past month, the department says the inspection was scheduled. WSDOT classified it as a routine check that happens every two years.

WSDOT bridge inspector Steve Nilsen says right after the reports, inspectors surveyed potential damage from the ground. He says there is no reason to believe the bridge is unsafe.

"If there's something that needs to come down, they will see it," Nilsen said.

Nilsen added it was a coincidence crews were out a day after a KING 5 report about Tom Kreyche's close encounter with debris falling.

Another man reported his car was damaged by falling debris in early July. WSDOT said it investigated front the ground and declared the debris did not come from the bridge's structure.

Another report came in to WSDOT July 27 with a boater telling them something had fallen from the bridge and hit his boat.

WSDOT says it does a full inspection of the bridge every two years.
