A vehicle crashed at the East Gate of Joint Base Lewis McChord, Sept. 6, 2012.

A service member was killed Thursday morning when his vehicle crashed at high speed into an abandoned guard shack at Joint Base Lewis McChord.

A JBLM spokesperson said the vehicle was exiting the base at the East Gate around 4:30 a.m. when it hit an unused guard shack. The male service member was killed.

Images from the scene showed impact and apparent fire damage to the shack, which hasn't been used since Sept. 11, 2001.

The crash remains under investigation.

Both directions of State Route 507 at East Gate Road had been blocked for a time, but by 7 a.m., traffic was moving.

Vehicles traveling to the base were restricted to one lane. Exiting traffic was being diverted to the Roy gate.
