ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Ellensburg police said Friday they had identified and were tracking the suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of another person.
Shortly after noon, police responded to the 100 block of West University Way where they found a person with serious gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
Police said the two knew each other.
Officers continued to look for the suspect into the evening and urge anyone who sees something suspicious to call 911.
Earlier in the afternoon, the incident caused Central Washington University to issue a shelter-in-place order and nearby residents were told to stay inside. The order has been lifted and schools in Ellensburg released on time.
The Ellensburg police first posted about the shooting around 12:30 p.m.
The suspect is described as having facial tattoos includes a cross and dark hair cut in a mullet. He was last seen wearing a hooded black jacket, light colored jeans, and white shoes.
Police said on Saturday that the suspect is a 17-year-old and that because he is a minor, they cannot publicly identify him.
Residents are encouraged to lock any outbuildings and remove their keys from their vehicles, according to Ellensburg police.
