Oak Harbor man arrested for shooting that left one injured near Skagit Valley College

The suspected shooter was booked for first-degree assault and attempting to elude a police vehicle.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A 28-year-old Oak Harbor man is in Skagit County Jail after being identified as the suspect in what is believed to be a drive-by shooting that left one man injured in Mount Vernon on Sept. 30.

The suspect was located around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1 by the Anacortes Police Department. He was taken into custody by the Washington State Patrol in Bellingham after trying to elude police. 

He was booked into jail for first-degree assault and attempting to elude a police vehicle.

KING 5 is not naming the suspect because he has not been officially charged.

On Monday, Sept. 30, a 41-year-old man was taken to Skagit Valley hospital after being shot near Skagit Valley College.

Mount Vernon police were sent to the 3000 block of East College Way around 12:40 p.m. for a report of gunshots. When they arrived they found one man with injuries.

The man's condition is currently unknown.

Nearby Skagit Valley College was placed on lockdown.

The college posted on X, formerly Twitter, at 12:49 p.m. that the campus was on lockdown. Subsequent posts over about an hour urged people to stay in lockdown.

The lockdown was lifted just before 1:40 p.m.

Traffic was blocked on East College Way near North 26th Street.
