1 dead, 3 injured after shooting, stabbing incident on I-5 in Federal Way

According to the Washington State Patrol, the driver of a black BMW died from a stab wound and three others were taken to the hospital.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — One person died and three others were injured after a shooting and stabbing event on Interstate 5 in Federal Way.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident happened in the northbound lanes of I-5, south of the Washington State Department of Transportation weigh station, at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

The driver of a black BMW, which had previously been reported stolen, died from stab wounds at the scene, according to WSP. Two other passengers in the same car were taken to the hospital with stab wounds and someone in the passenger seat of the BMW was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

According to WSP, there is no threat to the public.

"We only know what [first responders] were able to gather when they first were tending to people at the scene, which wasn't a whole lot," said WSP Trooper Rick Johnson.

Officials did recover a gun at the scene but could not identify what was used in the stabbing.

Two right northbound lanes and the off-ramp to the Seatac rest area were closed while officials investigated for nearly eight hours. According to WSDOT, traffic was backed up over seven miles and into Tacoma at one point.

The scene was cleared at approximately 11:15 p.m.

Officials are investigating what led up to the incident.

"We don't know the relationship right now. We're at the infant stages of the investigation," Johnson said. "The challenge is trying to figure out what happened inside the vehicle, obviously. The sequence of events."

Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle to contact police.
