Skye's close call: Dog falls onto moving car on I-5

The incident happened Thursday afternoon during rush hour traffic. A witness who helped the dog said cars were traveling around 30 to 35 mph.

SEATTLE — Arturo Mitchell still can't believe what he witnessed this past Thursday afternoon: rush hour traffic on I-5 northbound near 85th Street came to a halt because a dog had fallen from the overpass onto a car below.

"What're the odds that a dog is going to fall out of the sky and hit your window," Mitchell asked. "I didn't notice what happened at first. I thought maybe he had jumped out of a truck or something. No, he came off the overpass."

Mitchell said he and others sprang into action, checking on the driver of the car and the dog.

"I took a couple pictures and posted to some local groups to see if we could get in contact with the owner. Luckily, the post got a lot of attention. People drove out of their way to come help the dog."

The dog, ironically enough named Skye, was rushed to a vet thanks to the kindness of strangers. They were also able to get in touch with her owner.

Mitchell said the timing of everything had to be perfect for Skye to survive.

"It didn't bounce off the car. It didn't hit pavement. That it hit a car, what are the odds, right on that window to take the impact and still survive," he said.

Mitchell is hopeful law enforcement can figure out how exactly this happened if the dog did fall from the overpass.

"The scariest thing to me is, the thought that ran through my head, what if somebody tossed that dog? How did the dog get over," Mitchell questioned.

The dog's owner told KING 5 she had to take Skye back to the vet on Friday because she was having some trouble breathing. That's the last update we've received.

The owner also said this incident happened within about 20 minutes. Skye was home alone when she managed to get out. Then, a Facebook post was made in the missing pet group and the owner was contacted about her dog falling off the overpass onto a car below.

Washington State Patrol is investigating. They'd like any witnesses to come forward to help them figure out what happened.
