Skyway standoff ends in fiery rescue after suspect fires multiple shots

The King County Sheriff's Office said the man surrendered after the building went up in flames.

BRYN MAWR-SKYWAY, Wash. — A man was taken into custody more than two hours after barricading himself inside a Skyway apartment and firing several gunshots as officers staged outside, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect surrendered after the building went up in flames, but investigators said it was too early to determine exactly how the fire started.

Nobody was injured.

Deputies responded to the 8700 block of South 114th Street around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a court order violation.

The person or people protected by the order called police when the man showed up at the apartment, Deputy Mike Mellis told KING 5.

The protected parties were escorted to safety, but the suspect went inside, where he had access to guns, Mellis said, adding that he fired multiple rounds.

"This turned out to be a barricaded individual who fired shots and then paused and fired more shots, then paused and fired more shots. We don't know who they were directed at, but you can't shoot in a neighborhood like this, you certainly can't shoot in the general area of deputies," said Mellis.

He said no deputies fired their guns.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the building caught on fire, but the cause wasn't confirmed.

Mellis said the suspect surrendered and was taken to Harborview Medical Center for a medical evaluation before being booked in the King County Jail.
