Hilary Franz, other state leaders launch campaign for Smokey Bear license plates

Only you can prevent wildfires -- by supporting an effort to bring a new specialty license plate to Washington.

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Only you can prevent wildfires -- by supporting an effort to bring a new specialty license plate to Washington.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, State Sen. T'wina Nobles and other state leaders have launched a signature campaign to establish the state's first-ever Smokey Bear license plate.

Fees from specialty plates go toward supporting a specific cause or organization. Funds from the Smokey Bear plates will go toward wildfire prevention and a program to support wildland firefighters. The Department of Natural Resources said the money will help support their efforts to reduce the number of wildfires started by humans every year.

The plates will also help raise public awareness of wildfire prevention, supporters say.

“A Smokey Bear license plate would let people show their support for the firefighters who put their lives on the line every season to keep us, our property and our lands safe from fire,” Franz said. “Putting his image on vehicles across Washington will increase wildfire awareness by reminding everyone of his signature catchphrase: Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.”

Before the DOL will consider adding the specialty plate, 3,500 people are required to express interest. People who want to purchase a Smokey Bear plate can sign a form on the DNR's website to indicate their interest, and they will also be able to purchase a plate when it becomes available.

“As Smokey the Bear has taught us, only you can prevent wildfires. It is not only our duty to respond to immediate threats but to proactively address climate resilience, promote clean air, and safeguard Washington's natural legacy,” said Nobles. "The funds raised by the plates will aid our state's efforts in the fight against climate change, paving the way for a better, healthier future for all our neighbors.”

Nobles is the bill's primary sponsor in the Senate. An identical version will be sponsored by Rep. Brandy Donaghy.

Under the bill, people could begin buying the specialty plates in October of 2024. Plates will cost $40 for the initial plate and $30 for renewal.
