SEATTLE — Sound Transit CEO Julie Timm is leaving the agency, just over a year after assuming the position. Timm's last day with Sound Transit is Jan. 12, according to her resignation announcement.
Timm said she is returning to the East Coast to "take care of family matters," according to the Dec. 12 announcement.
In September 2022, Timm took over Sound Transit with a three-year contract paying her $375,000 per year. She also received $64,000 for relocation expenses.
On Friday, the Sound Transit Board of Directors agreed to pay Timm a full year's salary in exchange for "monthly consultations to the Board or chief executive officer until January 2025," the motion states.
Sound Transit is governed by an 18-member board of local officials from King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
"Since joining Sound Transit in September 2022, Timm has overseen a renewed emphasis on the rider experience as Sound Transit approaches the opening of several new extensions, starting with East Link next spring," the new release states. "Her focus and leadership in centering current and future riders in the agency’s capital and operating programs will benefit the region for years to come."
Prior to joining Sound Transit, Timm was CEO of Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), a local government bus line in Virginia.
A transition team is forming to help the agency navigate the leadership change and the Sound Transit Board of Directors will appoint an interim CEO in the coming weeks.
