DCYF restores Spanaway daycare's license after allegations of abuse

In August, a family claimed their baby was sent home from the Kids Space Learning and Daycare in Spanaway with serious injuries.

SPANAWAY, Wash. — The complaint against a Spanaway daycare accused of abuse has been closed, according to the Washington Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).

In August, a family claimed their baby was sent home from the Kids Space Learning and Daycare in Spanaway with serious injuries. The daycare's license was suspended during the investigation, but is now open as of last week, according to the DCYF.

If the findings of an investigation are not listed online -- and none were in this case -- then, a DCYF spokesperson said, the allegations were deemed to be unfounded.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department also confirmed Tuesday the investigation is closed.

Owner Tracy Barnes said in August she had "major concerns" and told the child's mother she needed to pick her up and take her to the doctor.

The child's grandfather, Brian Stoner, said the doctors believed the 10-month-old was sexually assaulted. Authorities called the daycare to see if they had cameras, but Barnes said the cameras had just arrived at the daycare and were not installed.

"It took them less than six hours to make that decision, to take a child from their mother, and then it took six days to shut down the daycare where it happened, and that's just unacceptable,” Stoner said in August.

Tiffani Wilson, assistant daycare director, said the process was protocol. Barnes said she has a well-vetted staff and has been running a daycare for more than six years without issues.

"It has nothing to do with whether they believe any wrongdoing happened," Wilson said. "It is just protocol when an allegation is made."

During the investigation, the child was taken out of its home and placed with Stoner. Investigators allowed the baby to be back with her mother later that week.
