All lanes of State Route 99 in South Seattle closed Thursday evening after a 17-year-old was killed in an overnight crash, the Washington State Patrol said.
According to Trooper Chase Van Cleave, the single-vehicle crash happened around 10:45 p.m. Thursday just north of 14th Ave S. The crash knocked down an overhead highway sign and scattered debris all over the roadway. WSP says the car caught fire after the crash.
Washington State Department of Transportation crews worked through the night Thursday and into Friday morning clearing the sign and debris from the road.
The southbound lanes opened before rush hour Friday morning. The northbound lanes opened around 8:30 a.m.
“We believe speed was a factor,” Trooper Van Cleave said. “Everything indicates that from the amount of impact to the damage that was done, and the debris field is very long in this collision as well.”
