The Washington State Patrol is starting to replace its aging fleet of Ford Crown Victorias with 200 new Chevrolet Caprices.

The Olympian reports WSP picked the Caprice for its drivability, storage space and cost, about $39,000 each once all the equipment is installed.

The cars will be equipped with radar, a GPS system, cameras, computer docking systems, prisoner cage, spotlights and light bars.

Heavier bumpers are also required on the Caprice in order for troopers to perform PIT maneuvers the maneuver by which they often try to stop fleeing drivers during pursuits.

About 15 new patrol cars will hit the road each month. WSP now uses more than 700 patrol cars.
