TUKWILA, Wash. — One of two suspects accused of fatally shooting a woman in the Tukwila Costco parking lot is believed to have fled the country.
On June 20, Salman Subeyr Haji, 19 of SeaTac, was indicted for armed carjacking in connection to a crime spree in January. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the federal indictment will prompt an international "red notice" for Haji, alerting international law enforcement to take him into custody.
Officials believe he fled just days after the January homicide.
“Our carjacking task force identified this case as meriting federal prosecution,” said U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman. “Separate and distinct from the fatal shooting in Tukwila, this defendant is alleged to have used a firearm to steal a car from a woman driving in Seattle. She made a narrow escape. This defendant needs to be held accountable.”
Haji has multiple known aliases, including Salmon Subeyr Haji, Salman Hagi and Markell Somo Jefferson.
According to charging documents, the two suspects carjacked a woman's Porsche at gunpoint in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood on Jan. 26. They rear-ended the driver and she pulled over. When she was reaching into the glove box to get her insurance information, they allegedly pointed a gun at her and demanded her keys.
They then drove the vehicle to Costco in Tukwila.
When the suspects arrived at the store, they tried to rob another woman of her purse, according to charging documents. Police said one of the suspects fired one shot that killed Yuam Ming, 67.
The suspects fled in the stolen Porsche before officers arrived. Ming was pronounced dead just after 10:40 a.m., according to police.
About 20 minutes before the shooting, investigators said the suspects tried using the stolen debit and credit cards from the carjacking to purchase gift cards at a QFC in Normandy Park.
The second suspect, Ilyiss Mohamud Abdi, appeared in court in May and pleaded not guilty to all charges he and Haji both face: first-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery, first-degree robbery and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
The case has been investigated by the Seattle Police Department, the Tukwila Police Department, the King County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI.
