PUYALLUP, Wash. — A driver suspected to have been under the influence when he allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian before crashing into a Puyallup Walgreens on the morning of Feb. 20 pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide.
Kyle Sandstrom, 41, was charged Feb. 21. Court set bail at $300,000.
Puyallup police and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue units responded at 9:19 a.m. to a collision where a vehicle had crashed into the side of a Walgreens located on South Meridian.
Units were told as they responded that multiple people reported to dispatchers that they had seen a "passenger" fly out of the vehicle just before the crash into the Walgreens.
Upon arrival, Puyallup police say they found an unconscious and severely injured man in a flowerbed on the east side of South Meridian. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers questioned the driver of the vehicle, identified in court documents as Sandstrom, and arrested him on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide.
The preliminary determination of officers was that the victim was walking on the sidewalk northbound on South Meridian when the Sandstrom's vehicle struck him from behind. Sandstrom then crossed all lanes of South Meridian before crashing into the Walgreens.
