Fatal overnight apartment fire in Tacoma leaves resident, 2 dogs dead

Crews discovered the victim after extinguishing the flames.

TACOMA, Wash. — An apartment unit in Tacoma caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and one person was found dead after crews extinguished the flames.

Crews first responded to the apartment building on North 26th Street at 12:41 a.m., per a social media post from the Tacoma Fire Department (TFD).

TFD said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other units in the building.

A person, described as an elderly woman, was found once crews were able to get inside. No additional victim information was available at this time. Tacoma fire also told KING 5 that the resident's 2 dogs were also found dead.

"It did not look good, because you could see the flames coming out the window. It was a sad scene," said neighbor Sarah Rose.

TFD also said the upstairs resident was assisted by the Red Cross for temporary relocation.

While the flames have been put out, TFD says there still will be an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. So far, it appears the fire was accidental according to a TFD spokesperson, but the investigation will continue.

It is unclear how many people total have been displaced, as KING 5 found many belongings from inside the burned unit had been moved to the exterior of the building.
