Arrest made in shooting death of 17-year-old girl in Tacoma

A man turned himself in on Tuesday. He was booked into Pierce County Jail on a first-degree murder charge.

TACOMA, Wash. — A 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in the Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma on Saturday night.

A man was arrested after he turned himself in on Tuesday, according to the Tacoma Police Department. He was booked into Pierce County Jail for first-degree murder.

Tacoma police officers responded to South Ridgewood Avenue and South 15th Street about 8:20 p.m. for reports of a possible shooting.

The girl was taken to the hospital in a private car after she was shot, according to police. She died at the hospital.

Dee lives in the complex near where the shooting occurred and says she watched Saturday night's events unfold.

"I saw a car that was driving real fast, but at the same time, he stopped. Whoever it was that was driving stopped, and when they stopped, they fired one shot," she said.

Dee says as a mother, one moment of that night was especially haunting for her.

"The young lady was on the ground and was crying out for her mom," she said.

There have been five homicides in Tacoma this year through March 24, according to the police department's crime dashboard. That is the same number of homicides the city saw during the same time period in 2023.
