Shooting near Port of Tacoma is the city's 25th homicide this year

The shooting occurred early Tuesday morning and is Tacoma’s 25th homicide for the year.

TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting near the Port of Tacoma on Tuesday.

Surveillance video from a business on Milwaukee Way shows someone approaching a vehicle at around 5:15 a.m. Soon after, a flash is seen. A person is then seen running down Milwaukee Way. Minutes later. First responders are seen arriving.

“Officers arrived and located an adult male who apparently suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound,” said Shelbie Boyd of the Tacoma Police Department. “Officers immediately started life-saving procedures. The fire department arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.”

Tacoma police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide, making this the 25th homicide for Tacoma this year. This time last year, Tacoma had 36 homicides.

“I would be much happier if I were standing here saying we were at zero at this point,” Boyd said. “But if we’re going to look at the positive side, we are down 11 homicides compared to this time last year, but still 25 is unacceptable.”

At this point, police say the suspect has not been identified, and investigators are calling on anyone with information to get in touch with the Tacoma Police Department as soon as possible.
