TACOMA, Wash. — One deputy has minor injuries and a suspect is in the hospital in serious condition after a police chase, shooting and standoff in Tacoma.
The string of incidents began late Tuesday night and lasted into early Wednesday morning.
Pierce County Sheriff's deputies were pursuing a driver they suspected of driving under the influence at 11:24 p.m. on Tuesday when the chase ended at a dead-end road at 4300 Vickery Avenue East. Deputies told dispatch that shots had been fired at 11:28 p.m.
One deputy believed he had been hit but was found to be uninjured after he was checked over in an ambulance.
Deputies called SWAT to take over the scene after the suspect refused to come out of his vehicle. Tacoma SWAT also responded to the scene in an armored vehicle.
As SWAT waited for the suspect to surrender, it was discovered a bullet struck the handcuffs of another deputy that was in the pursuit vehicle. The deputy was uninjured from the round, but had minor injuries from glass cutting his face.
Around 1:30 a.m., SWAT was able to remove the suspect from his vehicle. he was treated by SWAT deputies and taken to a local hospital.
The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is taking over the investigation.
