Logging has been part of the Pacific Northwest since people started settling here in the 1800s. Lewis and Clark traveled the Columbia River with their party in 1805, and the first sawmill was established in 1828.
There's a lot of history, love, support, and job creation because of this industry, and this is the area where it thrives the most.
Take 5 teamed up with Janicki Logging and Construction and got a little insight on why we're so prideful about this work.
The following are some of the benefits logging brings to our beautiful area:
*Washington is the second largest lumber producer in the nation, supporting more than 107,000 jobs in Washington state.
*More than 1,700 businesses in our state are related to forest products.
*Gross business income in forestry-related industries is approximately $28 billion per year, with $175 million paid in state and local taxes.
*According to a report by the Washington State Employment Security Department, more than 10% of forestry-related jobs are "green" compared to about 3% for the state economy as a whole.
*Hudson Bay Company erected the first mill in the Pacific Northwest at Fort Vancouver in 1828.
