Take 5: Personal experience prompts senator to push new surrogacy law

Sen. Pedersen says he is spearheading the Parentage Act to bring Washington up to speed when it comes to surrogacy.
Sen. Pedersen and his husband have 4 children by out of state surrogates.

Senator Jamie Pedersen has a personal connection with the legal limitations of surrogacy in Washington.

Pedersen and his husband have four children through surrogacy, but had to work with an out-of-state surrogate in order to pay her.

Now Pedersen says he is spearheading the Parentage Act to bring Washington up to speed when it comes to surrogacy.

The act would allow non-biological mothers in lesbian relationships to confirm her status as a “legal parent,” permit surrogates to be compensated, and give children conceived via assisted reproduction access to donor information at the age of 18.
