Teen passenger in critical condition after car drives into Lake Washington

The 20-year-old driver, who is the teen's sister, showed signs of impairment and will be arrested in connection to the incident, police say.

SEATTLE — A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was trapped for approximately half an hour inside a car submerged in Lake Washington on Saturday night, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police and rescue swimmers responded to the 9000 block of Seward Park Avenue South at Be'er Sheva Park for reports of a car in the water around 6 p.m.

Early investigation shows two people were inside the car when it went into Lake Washington. Police say an approximately 20-year-old woman, who was the driver, made it out of the car on her own and got to shore.

The 17-year-old girl, who was a passenger, was rescued after about 30 minutes in the water, according to the Seattle Police Department. Medics performed life-saving measures and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Seattle Police Public Information Officer Brian Pritchard said the two people involved are sisters. Pritchard said the 20-year-old showed signs of impairment and she will be arrested for vehicular assault after she is medically evaluated at the hospital.
