SEATTLE — At sunrise on Saturday, about 5,000 bicyclists pedaled off from the University of Washington for the 45th annual Seattle to Portland ride.

The Kaiser Permanente Seattle to Portland presented by Alaska Airlines, better known as STP for short, is an annual 206-mile bike ride.

Some bike the entire route in one day, and many make it a two-day journey, stopping to camp at the halfway point in Centralia and Chehalis. It ends at Holladay Park in downtown Portland.

The bike ride is a fundraiser for Cascade Bicycle Club, the state's largest bike advocacy and education nonprofit in the country.

Paul Tolmé of Cascade Bicycle Club said the summertime ride has only been canceled three times in history - twice due to the pandemic and when Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980.

The club contributes thousands of dollars a year to schools, nonprofits, and other community groups, KING 5 previously reported.
