SAMMAMISH, Wash. — It's an exciting week for golf fans in western Washington as the KPMG Women's PGA Championship started Thursday in Sammamish.
The tournament runs through Sunday at Sahalee Country Club and more than 5,000 fans are expected to attend the tournament each day.
This is one of the most competitive golf tournaments and the world’s top women golfers are competing for a more than $10 million purse.
This is only the second time the championship has been held in Washington. The first time was in 2016 at the same location.
Golfers of all ages and levels bought tickets to see the pro golfers in action for round one on Thursday.
One young golfer from Kent said she has been golfing for four years and that she loves the sport.
“It gets more fun the more you practice because you get better,” said Sidney Peterson, a 10-year-old golfer.
She said being able to see these pro golfers in action makes her want to improve even more.
“It’s really inspiring to see how good they are,” said Peterson. “It just gives me this feeling of like, oh, now I want to go down to the golf course.”
She was eager to see 15th world-ranked pro golfer Lydia Ko, who she waited to give a thank you card to on the practice putting green.
“Two years ago, she gave me a golf ball, and so I made her a bracelet and a little thank you card,” said Peterson.
The moment of giving Ko the card and bracelet was a win for Peterson, and she says she hopes that Ko can get a win this weekend too.
“I want to see her win," said Peterson. "The entire $10 million."
