A toxic algae bloom was reported Tuesday at Summit Lake near Olympia, according to Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.

Lake levels of Anatoxin-a, a fast-acting neurotoxin that can cause serious illness, registered at 9.95 micrograms per liter at the sample site. The state advisory level for Anatoxin-a is 1 microgram per liter.

Thurston County public health warned residents not to use water from the lake for drinking, washing dishes, brushing teeth, or bathing until toxin levels are deemed safe. People should also avoid swimming or letting pets out near the lake.

The algae toxin cannot be removed or deactivated by filtration, boiling, or other treatment, according to Thurston County public health.

The algae warning will stay in place until samples measure within safe levels for two consecutive weeks.

People may become sick after coming in contact with toxic blue green algae bloom. Symptoms may include an allergic reaction, such as skin rash, hives, and itchy eyes, throat, and nose. In rare cases, symptoms may also include stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
