Yet-to-open Lynnwood skate park already hit by vandals

It's a skatepark 10 years in the making, but it seems kids in Lynnwood are having a hard time waiting for the new park to open this summer.

LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- The Mill Creek skate park is cool, but some whouse it say it's also old.

They're looking for something new, something like the skate park near Martha Lake in Lynnwood, even though it isn't even open yet.

Usually people just climb over the fence sometimes, said 17-year-old Jessie Dechamp, who lives near the park.

Rebar and plastic tarps aren't stopping eager skateboarders from making runs up and down the dirt hills. Dechamp has also seen teens leaving beer cans and bottles, even though there are signs everywhere that say no trespassing.

They've already trashed it and it's not even open, said Sue Davis, who lives across the street from it.

She said she was excited, now she's worried.

They're throwing their garbage, they're vandalizing, they've already put graffitti on there. Idon't know why anyone would do this when it was built for them, saidDavis.

The Snohomish County Parks Department says this all became a big problem when construction stopped for the winter. To deter visitors, they've added fencing and signs. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Department also has deputies perodically drive by the park.

You've just gotta be patient for three-and-half more months, said park director Tom Teigan. We'll guarentee we'll have one of the best parks in the region.

Construction is expected to gear back up in April. The park is expected to officially open in July.
