SEATTLE - With a Lynn Shelton movie you're guaranteed three things: pitch perfect performances, something that will stay with you and a costarring role for Seattle and surrounding areas.
"It's like Seattle is a part of me," said Shelton. "It sounds corny but it really is in my blood and in my bones so when I'm writing, it's so easy for me. I cast neighborhoods and houses and streets like I do actors because I just know the city so well.
Laggies is the first of Lynn's films written by someone else. Originally set in Los Angeles, Lynn transposed all the locations to Seattle, giving Chihuly Glass and Garden its first cameo.
"It was the biggest day we had, " Lynn said. "We had 150 wedding guests dressed to the nines that had to go through hair and make up, but it was also a really emotional moment for the movie. It's kind of a turning point."
"And Keira nailed it," said Saint, using the actress Keira Knightley's first name as though he'd met her more than once.
"Yeah she really did." Said Lynn "Sometimes we would run out of time and she'd have just two takes and she would nail it. I don't think we would have shot the movie if she hasn't been such a pro."
In Laggies, Keira Knightley stars as a woman facing a quarter life crisis.
"She's flawed," said Lynn. "She makes mistakes.
She's fumbling her way towards her own identity and I've seen men get to this so many times and it's so nice to actually see somebody who's allowed to be lost and who's allowed to be a woman.
Laggies was shot all over Seattle last summer. With a star studded cast, could Laggies be the calling card that finally makes Lynn move to Hollywood?
No way!
"I really love living in Seattle. I love working in Seattle and I'm never going to move away. And whenever I can, I'm going to drag producers out of town to work here!"
