GOLDENDALE, Wash. -- Mandatory evacuations are now underway for residents in and around the Box Canyon area Wednesday night.

Fire officials say the Monastery fire has changed its course and grown consuming approximately 1100 acres.

Fire officials suspect a faulty muffler on a semi-truck sparked the fire.

Currently, there are 38 residences have been given a mandatory evacuation alert while 21 residences have been put on alert for a possible evacuation.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, Hwy. 97 was closed, but that has now been reopened according to the Klickitat County Sheriff's office.

Evacuees are reporting to the Klickitat County Fairgrounds where the American Red Cross is assisting.
