A Marine assigned to Marine Corps Installations Pacific was found dead Monday morning off the coast of Camp Schwab, Okinawa.

Officials did not immediately release the Marine’s name or circumstances surrounding the death. Members of the Japanese coast guard found the Marine was found at about 11 a.m. Japan Standard Time, about 10 p.m. ET Sunday.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire command are with the family, friends and co-workers of the deceased Marine,” Marine officials said in a statement. “We extend our deepest gratitude to our Japan coast guard partners for their immediate professional assistance in searching for and locating our deceased Marine.”

Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the circumstances and cause of the death, according to the release. The name of a deceased Marine typically is withheld for 24 hours after notification of next of kin.

On March 4, Sgt. Jaylon Walker, 24, of Garland, Texas, was found dead off the coast of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

The Marine, who was to return home next month, had been fishing with two friends when their boat capsized off Oahu near Marine Corps Base Hawaii. He became exhausted as he tried to swim to shore and drowned.
