What is CrowdStrike? Company linked to massive service outages across industries

The cybersecurity firm is linked to massive service outages impacting flights, 911 services, retailers and other industries.

SEATTLE — A software outage linked to the internet security company CrowdStrike has grounded flights across the globe and disrupted dozens of industries.

The company bills itself as a cybersecurity firm which is utilized by major companies to protect from breaches.

In a statement to NBC News, Microsoft said an update performed by CrowdStrike led to the service outages. The company posted a statement on its website saying there was a "defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts," and that the incident is not security-related or a cyberattack.

In addition to grounded flights, 911 services and news outlets are also experiencing difficulties with outages.

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport issued a statement on X saying that the outage is impacting systems for some airlines Friday morning and that passengers should check for the latest flight information and give themselves extra time.

The Retail Insight Network also reported that the outage is impacting retailers' Point of Sale systems.

Outages have been impacting dozens of industries since Thursday evening. There is still no ETA on when service will be fully restored from CrowdStrike. The company said it will continue to provide updates on its website.

The company counts 298 Fortune 500 companies, eight out of the top 10 financial services firms, seven out of the top 10 manufacturers, six of the top 10 healthcare providers and eight out of the top 10 food and beverage companies among its customers.
