What they love about the job
To kick off Nurses Appreciation Week, the Take 5 crew asked nurses about what they love about their job. Celine Torrella, a General Surgical Nurse, said, "I love my job; I guess i wouldn't be here if I didn't like what I do. It's hard enough to get through the day without liking what you do."
Busy schedules
Nurses are some of the most busy people in the workforce. "Well we're certainly not playing cards," Cristina Lane, an oncology nurse said. "We are definitely working very hard. Nursing is emotionally taxing, physically taxing, intellectually taxing." "Being a nurse is being constantly being interrupted," Dani Kraft, a NICU nurse said.
Finding support
"It makes our job possible, the support we have for each other," Laura McMakin, an oncology nurse said. "My coworkers feel the same way about all the patients that I do, and if I'm having a moment the fact that I can ask my coworker to step in for me is enormous," Julia Smith, a Journeyman nurse said.
How they feel about their patients
Nurses take their work home with them, too. "We don't just clock in at seven, and clock out a seven thirty. There are times where I'll go home and I'll still be thinking about a patient until the next day or days after" Jannelle Cruz, a NICU nurse said.
What they wish you knew about their job
"I wish people knew that we are educators at the bedside as well; were constantly teaching our patients" Elhan Jama, a general surgical nurse said. "We don't ever have a moment where we can 'turn off' emotionally because we can't do that for our patients," Jason Hyatt, an oncology nurse said.
