Nathan Adrian still has his sights set on the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The Olympic swimmer is scheduled to swim next weekend in his first meet since announcing a cancer diagnosis in January.
Adrian took to social media on January 24 to say he was being treated for testicular cancer.
The Bremerton native underwent surgery to remove lymph nodes but has not needed radiation or chemotherapy, according to an interview with Sports Illustrated.
Adrian tweeted he will remain under "close surveillance" and will have lots of check-ups and scans over the next several years.
A three-time Olympian, Adrian has won five gold medals, including two in the 4x100m freestyle and one each in the 100m freestyle, 4x100m IM relay, and 4x100m medley.
Adrian said he jumped back in the pool this spring and resumed training for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
His first competition will be next week's Tyr Pro Swim Series meet in Indiana, according to NBC Sports. Adrian will race in the 50m and 100m freestyles.
Following his announcement in January, Adrian said he planned to use his diagnosis to break the stigma around discussing men’s health issues.
“I’ve realized that too often we tend to avoid those important topics, ignore potential warning signs, and put off getting the medical help we need,” Adrian wrote.
