Dave Reichert may run for governor, report says

His decision could greatly shake up both the governor's race and the 8th District congressional race.
Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash.

SEATTLE – Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash., is seriously considering a run for governor, Roll Call reported Thursday.

The website cites multiple sources within the Republican party, including Reichert's former chief of staff.

Republicans have not won the Washington state governor's race since 1980. The closest they got was in 2004 when Dino Rossi lost to Chris Gregoire by 129 votes.

If Reichert runs, it would be a major shakeup for both the gubernatorial race and the race for Reichert's 8th District seat. The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report rates the governor's race "Safe for Democrats" unless Reichert decides to run. But they also rate the 8th District "Safe for Republicans" unless Reichert decides to leave the seat open.
