OLYMPIA, Wash. — The election for Washington state’s next governor is entering its final stretch and the state is close to continuing its record-setting streak of Democratic governors.
Democratic Attorney General Bob Ferguson would take 50% of the vote and former Republican Congressmen Dave Reichert would take 34% if the election was held today, according to a KING 5 News Poll. 16% of likely voters are still undecided.
Reichert polled well among likely voters who said border security, the cost of living, or crime were the most important issues in this election. He also leads among those likely, but not certain to vote and voters with high school educations.
When polled on each issue separately, Ferguson leads Reichert in every category including public safety, the economy, education, affordable housing and reproductive rights.
Here’s the breakdown of the issues:
- 53% of voters said they trust Ferguson more on reproductive rights, 23% said they trust Reichert
- 51% said they trust Ferguson more to improve education, 29% said they trust Reichert
- 49% said they have more trust in Ferguson on affordable housing, 28% said they trust Reichert
- 48% said they trust Ferguson more on the economy, 32% said they trust Reichert
- 48% said they trust Ferguson more on public safety, 34% said they trust Reichert
Current Governor Jay Inslee, first elected in 2012, did not seek reelection to a fourth term.
The state last elected a Republican governor in 1981.
