SEATTLE — Track vote totals in statewide Initiative 2109 by county on KING 5's exclusive interactive map during the November general election in Washington state.
If passed, I-2109 would repeal the state's capital gains tax, which targets top earners.
An initial round of election returns is expected to be released shortly after 8 p.m. on Election Day. These returns are from ballots that were turned in early and tabulated.
Counties will release additional results in the days after the election as more ballots are counted. Additional results are typically released daily.
On the map below, click individual counties to see a breakdown of the results by county and see what percentage of people voted for and against the initiative.
I-2109 is one of four initiatives backed by the conservative group Let's Go Washington this election cycle. It would repeal the capital gains tax, which state lawmakers passed in 2021. It levies a 7% tax on the sale or exchange of stocks, bonds and other assets that exceeds $250,000. There are exceptions to certain assets, including real estate and common types of retirement assets, among others.
Money from the capital gains tax funds measures like childcare subsidies, bonuses for childcare centers and school construction.
In 2023, the state collected $433 million from the tax.
Opponents of the measure argue it's bad for the economy and is a gateway toward an income tax in the future. The Washington State Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that it was constitutional and is appropriately characterized as an excise tax.
