SEATTLE — The executive board for the state’s largest private-sector labor union has endorsed Washingtonians voting “uncommitted” in the upcoming Democratic primary following a similar protest vote in Michigan.
United Food and Commercial Workers 3000 decided Wednesday to endorse the “uncommitted” vote as it stands in solidarity with its partners in Michigan.
The union said in a statement that “many voters, and UFCW 3000 executive board, feel that the best path to have the best nominee, and to defeat Trump, is to vote ‘uncommitted’ on the upcoming March 12” Democratic primary election.
The union said while President Joe Biden has been an ally to workers, that voting “uncommitted” will "strengthen the Democratic party’s ultimate nominee to defeat Trump in the General Election in November.”
The movement to vote “uncommitted” in Michigan was a protest vote to send a message to Biden that his administration must do more to address the crisis in Gaza.
In Michigan, the “uncommitted” vote received just over 100,000 votes. Biden still won the Michigan primary with 618,000 votes and received 115 delegates.
The union said it has many members who have been “deeply impacted” by the war in Gaza and the best way to send a message to the Biden administration is to vote “uncommitted.”
The UFCW 3000 is the largest local UFCW union in the nation with over 53,000 members in Washington, northeast Oregon and northern Idaho.
The Washington State Primary Election is March 12.
