OLYMPIA, Wash. — Firearms are now prohibited in several locations, following Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signing a new bill into law on Tuesday.
Senate Bill 5444, sponsored by state Sen. Javier Valdez (D-Seattle), bans the open carry of firearms and other weapons in public libraries, zoos, aquariums and transit stations or facilities used for public transportation, including bus stops and light rail stations.
“Today marks a significant step forward in prioritizing the safety of Washingtonians,” Valdez said. “With these designated areas off-limits to weapons, we’re proactively reducing risks and fostering environments where families can enjoy their time without fear.”
These locations were designated by law because they are frequented by families and people with children. The new laws hope to "create environments free from the worry of potential harm," according to a news release.
Washington is an open-carry state, which means people can carry firearms without permits. However, people who conceal carry their firearms must have a license.
This new law aims to prevent incidents where people display guns in public places to intimidate others. By banning guns in these locations, the new law builds upon existing legislation to help make public spaces safe and welcoming for all people, especially children.
Security and guards are exempted from these weapons prohibitions, as well as people with concealed carry licenses. Valdez said these exemptions "balance public safety concerns with individual rights and responsibilities."
The law goes into effect June 6.
In 2021, Inslee signed a bill into law banning the open carry of guns and other weapons at the Washington State Capitol and surrounding grounds and at or near any permitted public demonstration across the state.
It is illegal to carry firearms in jails, public mental health facilities, airports, sports stadiums and courtrooms, among other public locations.
