POST FALLS, Idaho – Students and teachers at West Ridge Elementary in Post Falls cannot find a time capsule they buried in 2009.
It is believed the capsule was buried in a garden, but when they went to dig it up, it was not there.
Now, students and staff cannot come to a consensus on which part of the garden it was buried in.
Kathy Willy was a fifth grade teacher at the time the infamous time capsule was buried. She showed KREM 2 where the former West Ridge janitor thought he buried it.
“Then we had some of the seniors show up, and they’re like no, no, no. It was way back here further, in those bushes,” said Willy.
So, it is not only the fact that the time capsule is MIA, it is also the fact that no one seems to remember exactly where they life it.
The capsule was buried by the inaugural graduating fifth grade class in 2009. It contained primarily letters from the students addressed to their future selves. There were also various knick-knacks and memories.
Those once-fifth graders are now high school seniors.
“We had teachers out here digging, our resource officers came out and looked around for a little bit,” said Principal Lisa Hoffeld.
No dice. Not even a metal detector or machinery would find the thing.
Then a few weeks ago, the seniors themselves came out to dig.
“Everyone had an idea of where it was. It depended on who you asked,” said Hoffeld.
At this point, West Ridge staff are confident that they have searched the area as best as possible. They are now fearing that a nefarious treasure-hunter could have come by at some point and made off with the time capsule.
“I don’t know. I wish that I did know and I wish that somebody would step forward if that happened,” said Hoffeld.
