Native American Heritage Month: Upper Skagit novelist shares journey as a writer

The month of November is Native American Heritage Month. KING 5 Weekend Mornings has been hosting indigenous artists and entrepreneurs to hear their stories.

SEATTLE — Since she was a little girl, Christine Day said she knew she was a writer. She not only enjoyed writing but loved to read.

Day continued her passion as she got older and began sharing her Upper Skagit Indian Tribe heritage through her writing.

Her first novel, I Can Make This Promise, was a Best Book of the Year from NPR, as well as a Charlotte Huck Award Honor Book, and an American Indian Youth Literature Award Honor Book.

Day said younger aspiring writers should be "true" to themselves and in that way, they can follow their passions.

Her current book, We Still Belong, hit shelves during the summer.
